Lastly, I read God’s Adventurer: Hudson Taylor by Phyllis Thompson, a biography about the God-driven missionary to China. This journal-type book is written from the perspective of a middle school Taiwanese-American girl and how she finds balance between her two different cultures. Then I read Year of the Dog by Grace Lin. I enjoyed several of the short stories and learned about the various dynasties’ cultures. The second book was a compilation of folk tales from China called Sweet and Sour: Tales from China retold by Carol Kendall & Yao-Wen Li. This Newbery Honor book is about a young boy, accused of being a coward, who is exiled to the top of a mountain to grow rice and grow in courage.

Part of my studies was to read several books set in China. Sadly, China has been a communist country since 1949. Another famous time was the Mongols ruled with their leader Kublai Khan. The Great Wall of China was started in the Qin Dynasty, after the Zhou Dynasty. I learned about when Confucius lived during the Zhou Dynasty. Most of the population is in the eastern third of the country.įrom my textbook, Journey to the Eastern Hemisphere, I learned about China’s rich history and dynasties.
